Extra Yarn can teach us a lot about how we treat each other and what we want to be.
Magic
“Leave it,” said Annabelle. “I won’t sell the yarn.”

Magic
- Could the events in this story have really taken place?
- Could Annabelle’s box of yarn really exist? Why or why not?
- Can we say that the box of yarn was magical? Why?
- Does magic exist? Why do you think so?
- What makes something magical?
- When a magician makes a rabbit come out of a hat, is that magic? (Or is it a trick?)
- If we agree that the box was magical, why was it only magical for Annabelle?
“Leave it,” said Annabelle. “I won’t sell the yarn.”
- Why didn’t Annabelle want to sell the yarn?
- Would you have sold the yarn? Why or why not?
- Ten million is a lot of money. Do you think Annabelle should have sold the yarn?
- Why do you think the archduke was willing to pay so much for the box of yarn?
- Would the archduke really be happy if Annabelle had sold him the yarn?
- Would Annabelle have been happy if she had given the archduke the yarn?
- Can money buy happiness?
- Is it good to keep giving things away?
- Assume that Annabelle would be very sad if the yarn ever ran out. Should she keep the yarn safe for special occasions only or keep giving the yarn away?
- Can we get happiness from giving away things? How?

Dinosaurs!
We are the Dinosaurs by Laurie Berkner
We are the dinosaurs, marching, marching
We are the dinosaurs
Whaddaya think of that?
We are the dinosaurs, marching, marching
We are the dinosaurs, we make the earth flat
We make the earth flat
We stop and eat our food, when we're in the mood
We stop and eat our food on the ground
We stop and eat our food, when we're in the mood
We stop and eat our food and then we march around
'Cause we are the dinosaurs, marching, marching
We are the dinosaurs
Whaddaya think of that?
We are the dinosaurs, marching, marching
We are the dinosaurs, we make the earth flat
We make the earth flat
We stop and take a rest, over in our nest
We stop and take a rest at the end of the day
We stop and take a rest, over in our nest
We stop and take a rest and then you'll hear us say
That we are the dinosaurs, marching, marching
We are the dinosaurs
Whaddaya think of that?
We are the dinosaurs, marching, marching
We are the dinosaurs, we make the earth flat
We make the earth flat
And then we roar!
'Cause we are the dinosaurs!
(Roar!)

This week we will read the legend of The Three Sisters which is a traditional work of the Mohawk people. When we think of the three sisters in planting, we think of corn, beans, and squash which were traditionally planted together. " The three crops benefit from each other. The maize provides a structure for the beans to climb, eliminating the need for poles. The beans provide the nitrogen to the soil that the other plants use, and the squash spreads along the ground, blocking the sunlight, helping prevent the establishment of weeds. The squash leaves also act as a "living mulch", creating a microclimate to retain moisture in the soil, and the prickly hairs of the vine deter pests." ( https://kids.kiddle.co/Three_Sisters_(agriculture)) We will play a game of the three sisters, hear a song, and play a planting game. |

The next Elsa Beskow book we will read is Peter's Old House and then we will watch a video about making houses in the style they did in those days. What do you notice about the way they are building? Do they go to the lumber yard or to the hardware store? If not, how are they able to build the house?

The next book by Elsa Beskow is one of my favorites: The Little Children of the Forest. We will read the book and then play a game of concentration with the images from the book. What do you notice about this little family? In Swedish they are called Tomte which means elves or gnomes. How big do you think they are? Did you recognize anything from the other books? What did the Mom use to make their winter clothes? How did the Dad defend himself against the snake? Would YOU like to go for a ride on the back of a friendly bat?
There is a lot of CAMOUFLAGE featured in this story. What IS camouflage? How is it helpful in nature?

Make Way for Ducklings won a Caldecott award in 1942! Before we see what book won THIS year. Let's explore Boston with a sweet family of Mallard ducks.
We have started to talk about the Caldecott Awards. They are awards given by The American Library Associations' Association of Library Service for Children to what are considered the BEST picture book of the year. There is always ONE gold medal first place winner, but sometimes there are 2,3, or even 4 silver medal honor books.
The award is named after a famous American book illustrator named Randolph Caldecott. Look at the image on the medal, and see if you can guess which of his illustrations it was taken from. Do you recognize any of the characters in the anniversary picture?
