Library Curriculum

Library at the elementary level focuses on instilling a love of reading, developing critical thinking skills, and preparing students for rigorous research projects in middle school. Our curriculum is aligned with the SPS district goals and the AASL (American Association of School Librarians) Standards.

Kindergarten 

  • Students will begin the digital citizenship curriculum with a focus on digital safety
  • Students will be able to identify fiction and non-fiction by the end of Kindergarten
  • Students will learn how libraries and borrowing books work

1st Grade
  • Students will continue digital citizenship lessons, with a focus on the online community
  • Students are introduced to book evaluation through participation in book awards such as the Irma Black in order to increase reader engagement
  • Students will be able to identify the Dewey Decimal System categories as well as different genres of books and use this to explore reading more widely by the end of first grade.

2nd grade
  • Students will continue digital citizenship lessons with an emphasis on community and safety
  • Students will continue book evaluation and engagement introduced in first grade
  • Students will have learned how libraries are organized by the end of second grade and will begin to understand the research process.

3rd grade
  • Students will continue digital citizenship lessons with an emphasis on personal responsibility and online interactions
  • Students will continue book evaluation and engagement.
  • Students will be able to use the online catalog independently and locate books in the library by the end of third grade.


4th grade
  • Students will continue digital citizenship lessons with an emphasis on ethical attribution
  • Students will read more broadly and explore literary genres in depth.
  • Students will be able to use NoodleTools to create bibliographies by the end of fourth grade.

5th grade
  • Students will continue digital citizenship lessons with an emphasis on website evaluation
  • Students will read more broadly and more often through participation in programs which may include Massachusetts Children's Book Award
  • Students will be able to independently find resources for projects and their own interests, both in print and online and use NoodleTools to create bibliographies by the end of fifth grade.
