We are going to start a new author study. Elsa Beskow. She is a Swedish author and illustrator. The first book we will read is Peter's Old House and then we will watch a video about making houses in the style they did in those days.
Adapted Activity:
Please read the book and watch as much of the video as you can. What do you notice about the way they are building? Do they go to the lumber yard or to the hardware store? If not, how are they able to build the house?

What do you notice about this little family? In Swedish they are called Tomte which means elves or gnomes. How big do you think they are? Did you recognize anything from the other books? What did the Mom use to make their winter clothes? How did the Dad defend himself against the snake? Would YOU like to go for a ride on the back of a friendly bat?

This week we will read the legend of The Three Sisters which is a traditional work of the Mohawk people. When we think of the three sisters in planting, we think of corn, beans, and squash which were traditionally planted together. " The three crops benefit from each other. The maize provides a structure for the beans to climb, eliminating the need for poles. The beans provide the nitrogen to the soil that the other plants use, and the squash spreads along the ground, blocking the sunlight, helping prevent the establishment of weeds. The squash leaves also act as a "living mulch", creating a microclimate to retain moisture in the soil, and the prickly hairs of the vine deter pests."
